A Community that stands together…
It's been 60 years since Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez formed what would become the United farmworkers union. 60 years later, they are still trying to be heard. On Friday, hundreds marched along side Dolores and the UFW in a show of solidarity to remind Governor Gavin Newsom that in a post pandemic world, our farm workers should not be forgotten.
This message fell on deaf ears though as Newsom released a statement saying he could not sign AB2183, A bill that would provide farm workers security and the ability to vote and organize from home or by mail, free from intimidation. Cries of
"no vote for us means no vote for you" were shouted from the stage by the same union that helped Newsom secure the 2021 recall election.
Only a few hours later, Newsom announced an opening of a new vineyard. One is left to wonder how many of the farm workers that stood on the steps of the Capitol demanding rights to better working conditions will be out in the fields of vineyard, keeping it running much like the rest of the state.
UPDATE: On September 28 2022, Governor Newsom signed AB2183. Si Se Puede!
